Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in Rwanda face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBTQ residents.
This study aimed to (1) quantify the level of othering of LGBT people in Rwanda, (2) assess the factors associated with othering, (3) identify LGBT groups that experience othering, and (4) examine how LGBT people in Rwanda experience othering and in what domains of life.
Whereas members of the LGBTIQ+ community in other East African countries are an endangered lot, in Rwanda, they are thrilled by efforts to guarantee and protect their fundamental human rights like all other citizens.
Although Rwanda has made laudable progress in forming a policy environment that affirms the rights of LGBT people to live openly, freely, and safely, LGBT individuals continue to face stigma, discrimination, and various other human rights violations.
